Summary

A mid-range ergonomic task chair from Steelcase with a back that flexes in two dimensions, weight-activated recline and a 12-year multi-shift warranty. Check which back style you are buying: height-adjustable lumbar support is included on the upholstered and 3D Microknit versions, not on every configuration.

Strengths

  • A 400 lb weight capacity and a 12-year multi-shift, 24/7 parts-and-labor warranty.
  • The Air LiveBack back flexes in two dimensions to encourage movement through the day.
  • Four-way arms adjust height, width, depth and pivot.
  • Weight-activated recline responds to body weight, with a boost setting and an upright lock.
  • The Zero-Foam Arm Cap is fully recyclable, and a CarbonNeutral option is available.
  • Steelcase sells service parts and runs Circular by Steelcase for reuse, recycling and repair.

Weaknesses

  • Steelcase does not publish the chair’s dimensions, seat height range or weight in readable text.
  • No independent instrumented test of the Series 2 was found from RTINGS, Wirecutter, Tom’s Guide, CNET or PCMag.
  • Wirecutter’s office-chair guide names the Steelcase Gesture as its Steelcase pick, not the Series 2.
  • Height-adjustable lumbar is limited to the upholstered and 3D Microknit back styles.
  • The CarbonNeutral certification is an option, not standard on every configuration.
  • No US price for this exact model was verified from accessible public sources.

Independent testing

RTINGS, Wirecutter, Tom’s Guide, CNET and PCMag have not published an instrumented test of the Series 2. Wirecutter’s July 2026 guide, built on more than 175 collective hours across panelists, names the Steelcase Gesture as its pick and leaves the Series 2 out. Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 guide, drawing on more than 5,000 hours across chairs, recommends the Steelcase Karman for comfort but does not review the Series 2 either. So the specifications and warranty here come from Steelcase, not from a lab.

Warranty and repairability

The Series 2 carries Steelcase’s 12-year multi-shift 24/7 parts-and-labor warranty, and the Americas limited lifetime warranty applies as well. Wirecutter notes that the coverage includes pneumatic cylinders and typical chair failure modes. Steelcase sells service parts and runs Circular by Steelcase for reuse, recycling and repair. Hardware-level reliability for this exact model is not documented, though Wirecutter reports Steelcase chairs holding up over six to ten years of heavy use, with one owner getting a free seat replacement under warranty after more than six years.

Price and value

No US list price for the Series 2 is published in the sources checked, so value depends on what a dealer quotes you. Wirecutter’s office-chair guide puts the Steelcase Gesture at $1,599 and the Herman Miller Sayl at $930, and it treats chairs under $200 as typically fixed-armrest and poorly warranted, $300 and up as a step up in adjustability, and $1,000 and up as premium. If the Series 2 sells in the $400 to $700 band it would sit against the HON Ignition 2.0, Wirecutter’s budget pick at about $481. The 12-year multi-shift warranty and 400 lb capacity are what separate it from that tier.

Which model this is

This page covers the Steelcase Series 2 Task Chair from Steelcase. The family also includes a stool, a headrest variant and an armless version, with back styles across Air Back, 3D Microknit, upholstery, quilted upholstery and a fabric back cover. Do not mix it up with the Series 1, Karman, Gesture or other Steelcase seating lines; those are different chairs. The Series 2 sits below the Gesture in the lineup, and the configurator holds more configuration detail than the main product page.
