Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A wired 3.5 mm over-ear gaming headset for people who want one headset that plugs into every console and PC, with no battery, dongle or pairing and 40 mm drivers shared with the pricier Arctis Nova 3 and Nova 7. Comfort is its strongest card, but check two things first: the EQ and 360° spatial audio only work through SteelSeries GG on a PC, and owners report the earcup pivot screw working loose over time.

Strengths

  • Works on anything with a 3.5 mm jack: PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Steam Deck, ROG Ally and more.
  • At roughly 235–236 g it is the lightest headset in the Nova line, and both full reviews name long-session comfort as its strongest point.
  • The 40 mm drivers are the ones the pricier Arctis Nova 3 and Nova 7 use.
  • The mic retracts into the earcup, so there is no detached boom to store or lose.
  • Games and voice chat sound good with no software installed at all.
  • Replacement ear cushions and a replacement fabric headband are sold as parts.

Weaknesses

  • Every Sonar feature, including 360° spatial audio and EQ, works only on a PC; on console the spatial audio comes from the console.
  • The mic capsule is bidirectional, not cardioid, and Tom’s Hardware found its noise isolation weak, so your keyboard leaks in.
  • Tom’s Hardware heard restrained, fuzzy bass and some lower-midrange distortion, though IGN heard punchy bass that did not distort.
  • Owners report the earcup pivot screw working loose until the cup separates from the headband.
  • The elastic headband strap is stretchier than the Nova Pro and Nova 7 versions and may stretch out over time.
  • The large flat plastic panels scratch, and IGN says the build does not feel as premium as costlier headsets.

Sound and comfort

The two full reviews of this exact model do not agree on sound, and neither published measurements. Tom’s Hardware found bass “pretty restrained (too restrained)” on one track and “present but fuzzy” on another, “some distortion in the lower mid-ranges”, and the headset “struggled with separating out details and layers” on a Beyoncé track. IGN heard “punchy bass that doesn’t distort at louder volumes, a great midrange, and decent highs”. Treat the sound as good for the money with a soft bass floor. Sharing drivers with the Nova 7 is not a promise of equal results: Tom’s Hardware tested the Nova 7 Wireless and was “not particularly impressed”.

Comfort is the part both reviewers agree on. IGN says the AirWeave foam works for people who wear glasses because the cushions “don’t press against your head”, and credits the stretchy band with spreading the weight until fatigue from long sessions is gone. Tom’s Hardware, testing through fresh cartilage piercings, reported no trouble and kept forgetting the headset was on. Both describe the mic well in absolute terms, but the bidirectional capsule picks up the room as readily as your voice.

What the software does

SteelSeries headlines 360° Spatial Audio, which reads like a headset feature. It is not. Tom’s Hardware is blunt: the Nova 1 is analog-only, so it can only reach Sonar’s features when it is plugged into a PC. On a PC, Sonar gives you separate EQs for gaming, chat and microphone, ChatMix, gain control and a 10-band EQ on the mic side. On PS5 and Xbox you depend on the console instead, and IGN found PS5 Tempest 3D Audio makes the headset “sound far better than it has any right to at its price point”. Sonar is not brand-locked, so it will EQ any analog headset you plug in.

The software is optional. Tom’s Hardware found games and voice chat still sound very good without it, and IGN notes the headset needs nothing installed to get Tempest on PS5 and Microsoft Spatial Sound on Xbox. One loose end: Tom’s Hardware described the mic-side AI noise reduction as still in early access at review time, and nobody has confirmed where it stands now.

Owner-reported problems

The clearest recurring owner signal is the earcup pivot. A January 2023 owner said an earcup detached while playing and a screw dropped out, and commenters described the same thing; a January 2025 owner independently reported a cup and its screw separating. In some cases the hidden screw can be reinstalled, while cracked plastic or stripped threads may need warranty replacement. There are also cable and mute reports: one December 2024 owner said the mute button failed quickly and the cable connection later malfunctioned, and a May 2025 user reported left-right imbalance and intermittent loss of the left channel depending on plug seating.

Some complaints turn out to be setup, not defects. A March 2025 owner solved very low output and a nonworking mic by reversing the asymmetric 5-pole/4-pole cable so the correct end went into the headset; the official guide confirms the special cable arrangement. One owner reported sound on the mic channel while hardware mute was engaged, but the plug modification they proposed is an unverified workaround — check cable seating and seek a replacement rather than altering contacts. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat the pivot screw as a known annoyance rather than a proven defect.

Repairs, parts and running costs

There is no battery, no firmware and no subscription, so running costs past the purchase price are close to zero. The connection is a standard 3.5 mm plug, and the main cable is detachable, so nothing locks you into a proprietary lead.

The wear parts are sold separately: SteelSeries Arctis Nova ear cushions in AirWeave and leatherette, and an Arctis Nova ComfortMAX fabric headband (choose the Nova wired pattern, not the Pro/7 pattern). A third-party known-fit option is the Brainwavz Nova-specific mesh pad at $16.88 a pair direct; if you replace pads every two years, that averages about $8.44 a year before tax and shipping. SteelSeries also lists a replacement cable and Y-adapter. The pivot screws, mic assembly, mute switch and driver shells have no verified separately sold exact-model parts, so a cracked mount or dead switch usually goes through warranty or means a new headset.

SteelSeries commits to at least one year of limited warranty in North America, and Micro Center advertises one year for parts and labor. It covers manufacturing defects, not wear or abuse, is non-transferable, and may need the authorized seller rather than SteelSeries direct. Save the receipt and photograph a loose pivot before attempting any fix.

Is it worth it?

$59.99 is the anchor: the launch price, IGN’s MSRP and SHI’s MSRP. Retail observations in October 2026 sat around it: Micro Center listed its 61607 stock at $49.99 against a $59.99 regular price, Best Buy listed the white 61607 at $59.99, Staples listed black 61606 at around $58, and SHI listed 61607 at $63.

At $40 or less new it is an easy comfort-first buy; from $41 to $50 it is still good value given the mic, the replaceable cable and cushions, and the light fit. From $51 to $60 it is fair. Above $60, compare it with the HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 at $49.99 on HyperX’s US store, the Logitech G335 at about $49.99 to $55.99, and the Astro A10 Gen 2 at about $44.99 promotional against a $69.99 reference. Near $70 or more, skip it unless a bundled warranty or return deal makes it worthwhile.

Buy it for comfort, cross-platform simplicity and a mic you never have to detach. Pass on it if you want wireless, a battery, or SteelSeries EQ on a console.

Which model this is

This page covers the Arctis Nova 1, part number 61607, sold in black and white. Retailers use different part numbers for the colors — Staples lists black as 61606 and Micro Center and Best Buy list white as 61607 — and no source explains any hardware difference beyond color. Do not merge it with the Arctis Nova 1P or the Arctis Nova 1X: SteelSeries publishes separate product guides for all three. Retailer pages mix the names, and a Lenovo page titled for the 1P describes the Nova 1 in its body text. Tom’s Hardware lists PC, PlayStation and Xbox versions that are “mostly the same with some small tweaks”.

Tom’s Hardware files the design as over-ear (circumaural) while Micro Center categorizes it as on-ear. The physical design is not in dispute. The Amazon listing behind this page is ASIN B0B8Q8P1FY.
