Summary
A 40 oz glass-carafe drip brewer from Moccamaster with a full/half-pot selector, SCA approval and a five-year warranty, for buyers who want simple, repairable brewing over programmability. Check your batch size before buying: the half-pot setting still needs grind and dose changes to taste right, and there is no programmable timer.
Strengths
- Fast for a drip brewer: a full 40 oz carafe in about six minutes and a half carafe in about 3.5.
- SCA-certified for 2026 and ECBC-certified, with brew temperature and brew-time targets behind it.
- The full/half-pot selector changes brewing speed and hot-plate temperature for smaller batches.
- A five-year warranty plus lifetime factory repair and a $99 flat-rate post-warranty service.
- Individual external parts stay available, so the carafe, basket and lids are replaceable.
- Simple heater, float and basket architecture with no display, app or software to fail.
Weaknesses
- No programmable timer or delayed start; the controls are a switch and a selector.
- The glass carafe sits on a hot plate, which holds coffee less well than a thermal carafe.
- TechGearLab scored brew quality 5.6/10 and judged the value poor at the tested price.
- Owners report weak half-pot brews until changing grind and dose, even with the Select setting.
- Chipped hot-plate coating is a repeated new-unit complaint, and one owner reported auto-off failure.
- The glass carafe is the weakest-feeling part and costs $40 to replace; the warranty excludes it.

Brewing and the half-pot selector
The KBGV Select runs a simple cycle: a 1,475 W element, an automatic drip-stop basket and a selector that changes brewing behaviour, not reservoir volume. A full 40 oz carafe takes about 4–6 minutes — TechRadar measured just under six, and about 3.5 for a half — with the coffee bed held at roughly 196–205°F and the hot plate at 175–185°F before its 100-minute auto-off. Independent testing is cooler on it than the brand’s reputation: TechGearLab scored it 48/100, with 5.6/10 for brew quality, 3.7/10 for user friendliness, 4.1/10 for cleaning and 6.2/10 for consistency, and called the value poor at the tested price. That conflicts with Tom’s Guide, TechRadar and Reviewed, which rate the coffee highly, so treat brew quality as contested rather than settled. The practical owner caveat is smaller batches: Moccamaster recommends at least 16 oz (4 cups), the selector does not meter water, and owners report weak half pots until they adjust grind and dose.
Cleaning, repairs, parts and running costs
Moccamaster covers the KBGV Select with a five-year warranty, sells external parts individually and repairs brewers for life; after the warranty it charges a $99 flat-rate repair including shipping, parts and labour. The carafe is the exception: one owner with a broken hinge tab was told the warranty covers internal repairs but not the carafe, which costs $40 to replace. Removable parts are hand wash only, and Moccamaster says to descale every 100 brews or at least every three months. Consumables are cheap and non-proprietary: #4 paper filters are $8.00 for 100. At one brew a day, filters run about $29.20 a year and descaler about $10.89, while a six-minute full-pot draw is about 53.8 kWh a year, roughly $9.86 at the July 2026 US residential average of 18.31 cents/kWh (EIA) — a total near $50 a year before coffee beans. Bean cost dominates for most owners, since a full pot uses roughly 60–75 g.
Is it worth it?
Judge it on price and how much you value repairability. At $270 or less it is a strong buy: Crate & Barrel had selected matte-white units at $269.95 (October 2026), a $100 discount from the $369.95 regular price. From $271 to $320 it is a good buy for someone who wants simple physical controls and a glass carafe. From $321 to $369 it is fair but expensive, because the SCA-certified OXO Brew 8-Cup is $219.99 with a thermal carafe and single-cup brewing. At the normal $369–$380 across Moccamaster, Target and Williams Sonoma, the $399.95 Fellow Aiden adds programmable profiles for about $30 more, and the Breville Luxe Brewer Glass at $229.95 adds custom settings for less. If you want thermal holding, one-button automation or timed brewing, this is the wrong design; if you want a brewer you can keep fixing, it is the one.
Which model this is
This page covers the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select, the US 120 V glass-carafe brewer with an automatic drip-stop basket and a full/half-carafe selector. Some units print SELECT on the body and some do not; Moccamaster says the half/full switch is the identifying feature. It is distinct from the thermal-carafe KBGT and KBT models and from older KBG versions without the Select flow adjustment.
