Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A budget plastic pet fountain with a 2.8 L reservoir, two drinking flows and a replaceable corded pump. Its weak point is upkeep: expect weekly cleaning and frequent filter changes to keep it quiet and running.

Strengths

  • A mature, widely owned design with deep review history and easy-to-find filters and pumps.
  • The pump is user-removable and sold separately, so the fountain can be repaired rather than replaced.
  • The feature set is complete for the money: two flows, a water-level window, a switchable LED and a silicone mat.
  • Authentic and third-party filters are common and inexpensive.
  • Owners report pets accept it and the capacity suits cats and small dogs.

Weaknesses

  • Plastic water-contact surfaces are less scratch-resistant than stainless over time.
  • Weekly full cleaning, plus pump and impeller care, is needed to keep it quiet.
  • Pump noise rises as the water level falls, and pump failure is the clearest long-term signal.
  • Branded filters on a two-to-four-week schedule can cost more over a year than the fountain itself.
  • No app, battery, water-quality sensing or wireless pump.
  • Warranty and dimensions conflict across sources.

Cleaning and running costs

The fountain is cheap to buy and fussy to own. Veken’s current guidance calls for a full clean every five to seven days, regular pump and rotor cleaning, and filter changes every two to three weeks, and other current copy stretches that to two or four weeks. Owners who keep up with it report quiet running; slime, biofilm and dirty impellers are the usual result when they do not, and a dirty impeller or low water are common causes of extra noise.

Branded filters add up. At $11.99 for a four-filter set and a two-to-four-week change schedule, the yearly bill lands around $39–78, several times the fountain’s purchase price, though third-party filter media can cut that sharply. The pump should never run dry.

Pump noise and replacements

The recurring ownership complaint is noise: the pump gets louder as the water level drops, gradually grows noisier over time, and sometimes fails after weeks or months. That said, multi-year service is reported, so long life is possible; neither outcome is a measured average. Veken’s copy claims a maintained pump lasts 1.5–2 years, a manufacturer claim rather than an average.

Is it worth it?

At a budget price it is an excellent first fountain for someone who accepts plastic and weekly cleaning. Once the price climbs toward the stainless alternatives, the plastic body and the ongoing filter spend make them the stronger choice. The Veken store listed it at $19.99 in September 2026, and the four-filter set at about $11.99; a compatible replacement pump ran about $12.98. Check the store panel above for current pricing.

Which model this is

This is the Veken C1 Classic 95oz, model VK664. The US listing is ASIN B08NCDBT7Q. Some catalogue mirrors also show PFS3V243, a catalogue code for the same listing, not a different fountain. Don’t merge it with the stainless-lid VK665, the blue 95oz variant or the 108oz C1.
