Summary
A corded 120V, 3.7A, 5-inch random-orbit sander with adjustable speed, a dual grip and a removable dust box, for furniture and general wood finishing. Check two things before you buy: it weighs 3.90 lb, and the dust box is a small collector, not a shop vacuum.
Strengths
- Independent testing found strong stock removal on stained boards and rough pallet lumber.
- The 6,000–13,000 OPM range covers both rough preparation and finer finishing.
- Two grips: a rear handle for controlled two-handed pressure and an upper palm grip.
- A brushed motor with easily replaced wear parts keeps long-term ownership cheap.
- Genuine consumables are inexpensive and widely stocked for a tool at this price.
Weaknesses
- Dust collection relies on a small box that must be emptied and cleaned often.
- The 3.90 lb body and the power cord make overhead or vertical work tiring.
- The round 5-inch pad cannot reach inside corners.
- Running the tool without a disc attached damages the hook-and-loop pad.
- The manual forbids using this sander to remove lead-based paint.
- Nobody has published a failure rate or a service life for the motor or brushes.

Dust collection and setup
The pad’s eight holes and an internal fan push sanding waste into the bolt-on box, and Bob Vila’s hands-on tester rated the built-in collection as effective for a sander in this class. It is still a small collector: follow the manual’s instructions for attaching and emptying it, and wear a mask and ventilate, because nobody has published how much respirable dust the box captures. The manual’s troubleshooting page lists a faulty switch, internal wiring, motor faults and overheating among the causes of a dead or stalled tool; that is guidance, not evidence of a common defect. WEN also warns that the sander must not be used on lead-based paint or other hazardous coatings, and that its vents must stay clear. Clamp the work, size the extension cord to the load, and unplug the tool before changing discs or emptying the box.
Repairs, parts and upkeep
The 6305 is built to be repaired rather than replaced. Genuine WEN parts are cheap: the hook-and-loop sanding pad is $8.06, a pair of carbon brushes is $7.18 and the dust box is $7.53, all sold directly by WEN (October 2026). The manual’s exploded drawing calls the dust box 6305-003B while the parts store sells 6305-003, so ask WEN which one fits your serial before ordering. The pad can lose its grip if you run the tool without a disc, and the brushes wear as any brushed motor does. The switch (6305-011), speed-control board (6305-018), power cord (6305-004) and fan (6305-032) are all replaceable, though WEN could not confirm live prices or stock for those internal parts, and professional labor can cost more than a new unit at $38.98. Report missing or damaged parts within 30 days of purchase, and keep the receipt and serial number.
Sandpaper is the recurring cost. The WEN 6305SP80 80-grit 10-pack runs $6.51 at Home Depot (October 2026), about 65 cents a disc; a 50-pack of DIABLO universal-hole 80-grit discs is $22.97, about 46 cents a disc; and a 15-pack of DIABLO 120-grit discs is $9.97. Match third-party discs to the pad’s eight holes so extraction keeps working. There is no subscription and no required cartridge, so outside sandpaper the yearly running cost is near zero. Electricity is the only other running cost, and nobody has metered it: an illustrative 0.35 kW average over 20 hours a year at $0.20/kWh works out to about $1.40, but treat that as arithmetic, not a measurement.
What owners report
Few owners have published long-term results. On Smoking Meat Forums, one self-described 6305 owner said they had used it extensively and valued the adjustable speed; a Lowe’s verified buyer in March 2026 praised its woodworking performance and the instructions. Neither gives a failure rate, so treat the tool’s lifespan as an open question rather than a known problem.
Is it worth it?
WEN and Home Depot both showed the 6305 at $38.98 in October 2026. At that level it is a credible home-workshop buy: real independent test performance — Bob Vila’s hands-on comparison scored it 4.7 for performance, 4.5 for ergonomics and 4.8 for value — a broad speed range and cheap replacement parts. If checkout climbs past $50, compare the $99 DEWALT DWE6423 or the $105 Bosch ROS20VSC (Home Depot, October 2026), which cost more but bring a lower-profile body and, on the Bosch, a vacuum adapter. The simpler BLACK+DECKER BDERO100 lists at $39.99 and drops variable speed; the fixed-speed BLACK+DECKER RO100 lists at $29.97.
Which model this is
This page covers the WEN 6305, the corded 120V, 3.7A version of WEN’s 5-inch random-orbit sander. WEN’s product page once called the tool “cordless” in a single sentence, but the manual, the spec sheet and every retailer listing describe a corded tool, and the box holds no battery or charger. The listing quotes the speed range as 6,000–13,000 orbits per minute, while the manual labels the same no-load range 6,000–13,000 RPM: same numbers, different label.
