Summary
A budget indoor/outdoor security camera with 2.5K QHD video, color night vision and a magnetic mount. Check placement before you buy: the Cam v4 runs on wired power, so it is not a set-and-forget battery camera.
Strengths
- 2.5K QHD video is sharper than the 1080p budget cameras it undercuts.
- Color night vision with the 72-lumen spotlight is impressive in dark outdoor scenes.
- Person, package and vehicle detection plus AI tracking is a lot for the price.
- The magnetic base mounts on metal surfaces with no tools.
- IP65 body and a -4°F to 122°F range suit outdoor use.
- Motion notifications can fire in under two seconds.
Weaknesses
- It needs wired power, so it only goes where a cable can reach an outlet.
- On the free plan, cloud clips stop at 12 seconds with a cooldown between recordings.
- The free tier sends only a screenshot per event and makes you wait five minutes for the next alert.
- Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only, so a busy network can cause stutter or delay.
- Micro USB is dated for a device that stays plugged in.
- Wyze’s history of exposed camera feeds is a real caution, even though the v4 was not implicated.

Video and night vision
Tom’s Guide tested the Cam v4 and found the 2.5K image sharper than the 1080p budget cameras it competes with, with digital zoom up to 8x that stays readable on text. Color night vision is the standout: the built-in 72-lumen spotlight lights a dark outdoor scene well, though it is not a floodlight. Lower framerates occasionally make motion look choppy, and with no 5 GHz Wi-Fi the stream can stutter on a busy network.
Detection, alerts and storage
The camera classifies people, packages and vehicles, and motion notifications can fire in under two seconds. Smart Focus tracking zooms in and follows a subject, which narrows the field of view while it works; you can turn it off. Facial recognition is not in the base plan and needs Cam Protect. On the free tier the camera keeps 14 days of cloud clips capped at 12 seconds, with a cooldown between recordings and only a screenshot plus a five-minute wait before the next alert. Drop in a microSD card to record continuously without a plan, or pay $2.99 a month for Cam Plus to lift the clip limit and cooldown; Cam Protect is $3.99 a month and adds facial recognition and 24/7 monitoring.
Security and privacy history
Wyze’s recent past is a fair reason to pause. PCMag dropped its Wyze recommendations in 2024 after a bug briefly let owners peek into other people’s homes and an incident in which 13,000 users received pictures from strangers’ cameras, plus a vulnerability left undisclosed for about three years. PCMag reinstated its Wyze Cam V3 rating in May 2026 after security fixes and more open communication. The Cam v4 itself was not implicated in those incidents.
Is it worth it?
Tom’s Guide highlights the Cam v4 as a value pick for indoor security cameras. Under $40 it is a strong buy: 2.5K video, color night vision, an IP65 body and full AI detection is a lot for the money. From $41 to $50 it is still reasonable, and above $50 it is hard to justify unless the magnetic mount or the Wyze ecosystem is the point. CNET’s 2026 budget pick is the TP-Link Tapo C210 at $30, and it does not list the Cam v4 among its top cameras.
